Dance form such as Bharathanatyam was originally called temple dance was practiced by courtesans and a class of women known as Devadasis. As time passed the compositions presented in Bharathanatyam were often centered around human experiences and emotions which were made possible for audiences across cultures and time periods to connect and understand.
Most of the Bharathanatyam repertoire practised today traces its origins to the Nayaka and Maratha kingdoms, which ruled over large areas of Southern India from the late 16th century to the mid 19th centuries.
